The Importance of Not Being Nice

nice wine

A Google search reveals that the phrase nice cup of tea appears about 24,000 times on the internet, whereas good cup of tea appears only about 5,300 times. However, good cup of coffee appears just over 18,000 times, whereas nice cup of coffee appear 5,200 times. All in all, tea is nice 4 times more than it is good, and coffee is good 3 times more than it is nice.

Why is tea nice and coffee good? Conducting my own search for whether a bottle of wine is ‘nice’ or ‘good’ found the following: A nice bottle of wine occurs 15,300 times (or 38% of the time) and a A good bottle of wine over 25,000 times (62% of the time).

It always baffles me when a customer gives me ‘nice’ or ‘good’ as the only description of the type of wine they want. What doeither of these words menay, anyway? Not shitty? Acceptable? Onoffensive? Not bad? Geez, people should have higher standards for themselves. People bring me good bottles of wine all the time. They don’t cut it. I wish… To me, when someone refers to something as “nice” (with the accompanying shrug), it’s the wine equivalent of just something with alcohol in it–I don’t deserve anything more.

Other interesting results from Google searches:
“shitty wine” - result #2 the excellent www.bitterwaitress.com.

“wine bullshit” - stupefying people and their behavior laststory.com

“it’s just wine” - a link to the Aussie site of Wine X Magazine

“cheap wine” - other than alot of articles about that bullshit wine I shall not name that Trader Joe’s sells, this link 30 Second Wine Adviser to Decanter’s wine lover’s page. Also the most results, 175,000.

** In general, I was surprised by the lack of results when combining the word “wine” with various profanity. Seeing as how people get so worked up about it. Huh, I thought there’d be a ton of results, a shitload really.
