Latch Key Kids, Muscat, and Breakfast for Dinner
So, let’s see,
I ate doughnuts for breakfast
at Top Pot Doughnuts .
I had grilled cheese and tomato soup
for lunch at Easy Street Records
(info HERE )
… I feel like a latch key kid again!
The only way to make it a trifecta
would be BREAKFAST FOR DINNER!
There’s this waffle mix looks like something t
hat might have been left on the bottom shelf
since a ‘78 remodel. But it is in fact the best
waffle mix in the world. You can order it from
www.nordichouse.com here.
Unless you know the night before you’re going
to have waffles and you make the mix from
scratch the night before, properly, with yeast.
But who plans on waffles??
Although I could go for a 611 Supreme crepe.
That’s a bit fancy pants for the way my day is going, though. But as long as I’m digressing–awesomely huge crepes, fantastic and mellow bar area. The coolest crepe they do is the almond butter & Gruyere. It’s not almond butter like peanut butter. It stops short of marzipan-y, maybe salted butter with almond paste? Add the melted Gruyere and it makes a helluva salty/sweet combo. Add two glasses of dry Muscat, and it’s a great way to start the night.
Vignalta "Sirio" Dry Muscat or the Cantina di Venosa "Terre di Orazio" Dry Muscat are my favorites. They’re both around $12. The Vignalta comes from the Veneto in the north, has a softer floral aroma and great stoney character. The Muscat from Cantina di Venosa, from a coop of such determination and, well, cooperation, it has garnered the reputation of being one of Italy’s best, is a tad more flowery, with a more apricot/stone fruit richness. Italian dry muscats are it for summer. They love stinky cheese, fresh herbs, shellfish, and long walks on the beach. Every time I’d try to sell a dry Muscat, even after clearly saying "DRY Muscat," I’d have to explain 4 or 5 more times. These wines are dry. As in, they are not sweet. Muscat makes a lot of sweet wines. These are not those. Muscat is always smelly, but not always sweet. These wines, they’re dry.
