Elvis, Bruce Campbell, What I Drank

Uh, also–Elvis died this week…30 years ago this week. My only Elvis memory: Driving back from New Orleans once, I drew the very short straw of driving the first leg, the morning after Mardi Gras. I was incensed, and then saw the turn off for Memphis, parked the car right outside Graceland, honked the horn, and ran towards the grounds.

My pissy carmates found me by the eternal flame. Yes, did you know there is an eternal fucking flame at Elvis’ grave site? It’s right near the tacky inground pool. Graceland as a domicile is barely passable by today’s McMansion standards, kind of a dump no self-respecting C-lister’d be caught dead in. But the strangest thing is the people who come to sit by Elvis’ grave, somber, sobbing. While our fresh from the far-side-of-drunk asses were snickering.

Anyways, my favorite Elvis movie stars the most excellent Bruce Campbell, Bubba Ho-Tep. Just rent it. You’re welcome.

Here’s what’s in my recycle bin:

Domaine de Carran 1998 Gigondas - One peppery bitch, served with flank steak off the grill because you just have to have those things together. Rich-light dark red fruit, silken tannin, a soft bass note of earth… Gigondas isn’t cheap anymore. Too bad, I used to love to buy these for under $15 and forget about them for 6 years.

Nicely done, Bruce Campbell and Gigondas, way to show off your high-low brow adeptness. Bubba Ho-tep is one of his finest works, if you don’t count the Old Spice commercials.

That movie is the best! Too bad I’m too poor to ever buy something as swell as 98 gigondas. But I’m still drinking some wine that you recommended last spring a cheap Valpolicela that impresses all the ladies.
