Vietnamese Lizard Wine

My brother runs vlogmap.org, and sent me this link to a new vlog that posted from Vietnam.

Don’t say I didn’t tell you it is a little deeeeee-sgusting, and graphic. The Vietnamese make wine and liquor from many different animals and their specific organs. So if you can’t even handle blood cube in your noodle soup, don’t watch this.

It’s from a blog, A Life In Hanoi, video, food, drink and life from Hanoi, Vietnam–and it is my feed of the week. There is some great stuff on his site, and I;m taking notes. Because Vietnam is my favorite place I’ve never been. Yet.

err…the tail wiggle during disembowelment was a bit much for me, though popping the eyes out did make me wonder what effect leaving them in would have on the finished wine. Viscosity?

Yikes, I forwarded it before watching the whole thing… can’t imagine what the jar looks like after 20 years.

I like the background music…oh…and I am very happy that my little Pho restaurant doesn’t have a liquor liscense…

Fortunately, there is an abundance of good and inexpensive French wine available in most restaurants, at least in Hanoi where I visited. I was challenged by many things on my visit but saw nothing as icky as this (unless you count the puppies that were kept at a nearby work site — they were not pets).

I’m living in Cambodia at the moment and the locals are similarly, um, ecumenical in their approach to animal parts in rice wine, although thankfully I haven’t captured any on film.

My favorite Cambodian news story of last year involves a particularly potent batch of toad wine:http://news.monstersandcritics.com/asiapacific/article_1194789.php/Drunk_monks_streaking_gets_him_disrobed
