New Years Is Two Years

Nerds! Nerds! Nerds! Nerds!
2006 has to be the pinnacle of the dork tide. Mind you, I say this as I’ve finished an epic 6 hour game of Risk. We chased our world domination with roast beef sandwiches and 1988 Masi Amarone which was teetering on the edge of greatness. Glad I didn’t wait another year.
That’s the cool thing about wine. You can collect all you want, but wine is meant to be drunk. Wait too long, and you’re half way to salad dressing. This bottle was in full stride–an auburn goddess stinking of exotic fruit and tasting almost like sherry. You hear fabric references with wine all the time–velvet, suede. This wine was like drinking silk charmeuse.
I’ve had older wines, but this one got me thinking. 1988. I was in high school. Never had a boyfriend. Just getting my license. Working nights at the video store. Hanging out at Wax Trax. These were my formative years. First night games at Wrigley. First time I heard Nine Inch Nails. Desperate to weasel out of gym class. Boys started calling, but not the one with the ice blue eyes (only good thing about gym class). The more I remember, the more I love this wine. Shit, as I’m boozily reminiscing, I just lost everything from Alberta to the Ukraine…
So how’s this supposed to go? “I can’t believe it’s been two years…blah, blah, blah”
Well, I can. And I can’t. I can’t believe I’m still doing this blogging–still interested in doing this. That’s your doing more than mine. So thank you for reading and for helping me confirm I’m not crazy.
I try to write useful things. Expect more op-ed leaning posts, as I’m gonna keep a bit more of the ghost for my clients and print. A girl’s gotta eat, and I want to keep this site free so I can light into any and all. But this girl also gets bored (I am a triple Aquarius), so I may redecorate the place. Can’t say. For all of you who are begging for podcasts… keep begging. You cost me a pretty penny in bandwidth last time. I’m looking into it… but not very motivated…

Happy New Beer! And keep the good stuff coming, even if it comes irregularly - we all know that quality is preferable to quantity.
My friends and I played Risk for three hours on a recent New Year’s Eve; we had to break it up because one contestant was over-70, and we were all damn tired by then anyway.

I get your feed and devour any new posts. You have taught me so much! I now feel cool walking in my local wine shop instead of scared to death. Nobody writes about wine like you do. Don’t stoP!

Risk, Wax Trax, Stormtroopers, and Amarone? Like no other wine blog. You constantly prove yourself when not even trying at all. Happy New Year and where can I find a bottle of that Amarone????

I agree. Keep blogging. You voice is one of the most refreshing out there in the world of wine writers.

“but not the one with the ice blue eyes (only good thing about gym class)…” ??? Who could that be? I think I know but I won’t publish the name on your blog.

So, I just discovered your blog in the list of nominees for Tom Wark’s gig. Glad I did. Though I disagree with you about Food Network (Paula is my hero, along with Jancis), you couldn’t be more right about Tampopo and The Cook, etc. *Note to self: add both of these to Netflix to re-enjoy.
There ain’t a damn thing wrong with being surly.
