Not So Fast…Wine Shipping Regulations Change?
OK, don’t anyone bust out the credit cards just yet. Technically it’s legal for wineries to ship to all 50 states now. But big shoulder states like Illinois are bound to react. Keep in mind, distributors are the big money makers in this business (it’s never the creative talent), and they don’t like more competition. Some states’ laws are in conflict with this ruling, so they might inforce them regardless of this outcome.
The ruling was simple. It hinged on the fact that if in-state wineries could ship to a customer, you can’t prevent an out-of-state winery from doing the same thing. However, the ruling did not prevent a state from 86ing wine shipments altogether. So, I wouldn’t be ordering up that Chateau Montelena wine club for your hacienda in Philadelphia just yet.
BTW, amazon.com just partnered with wine.com…posturing for some rule changes no doubt. Here’s hoping that goofball Jeff Bezos puts some lobbying dollars on the table.
