Rover’s Super Meal Deal: “Budget” Dining the Right Way
It’s Monday, and I feel like doing some pimpin’. I get tons of press releases and invites that ignite absolutely zero to negative passion in my salivary glands. But this little gem is too good not to share with any and all of the Seattlites who read this blog.
This month, Rover’s chef and owner Thierry Rautureau brings recipes from his cookbook, Rover’s: Recipes from Seattle’s Chef in the Hat to life in a 5 course tasting menu for herbivores and omnivores alike. For $90 two people will each enjoy the five-course Rover’s Cookbook Tasting Menu, excluding tax and gratuity. ( Tue - Fri each week from Jan 6 through Feb 3) What that is, right now, is the most screamin good food deal in town. So it’s January. So you made some stinking resolutions. So what. How about you do Valentine’s Day early and avoid the idiots?
I know. I’m so smart. You’re welcome.
Thierry was here first. He predates any dumbass magazine Top 10/Best New chef list. He’s personality-plus with a great sense of humor and infectious laugh. And the food at Rover’s is a spectacular treat, familiar and exciting all at once. The flavors and pedigree of a 3 star restaurant, the service is flawless, warm, and not-at-all-East Coast. (eh hem, you know what I mean.) This is one of those few places where I will drop cash with utter confidence and faith. And I am a tight ass when it comes to fine dining. You know what they say about doctors making the worst patients….
And the wine list deep and wide; so don’t bring your own wine. The corkage is high-for good reason. Cyril has a great list and employs a most judicious mark-up, no expense account required. Many, many, many interesting bottles in the under $50 range.
((Diners can also purchase signed copies of Rover’s: Recipes from Seattle’s Chef in the Hat for $40 plus tax when they visit the restaurant for the tasting menu.))

That is a serious tip, M; makes me want to sell the shop and hop one of them luxury trains up there and take full advantage for the whole month.

Wow! Thanks for this exciting news Maggie. Ken & I got a well-meaning $100 gift certificate for a wedding present from my out-of-town brother-in-law, not knowing we’d have to throw down an extra $200 just to use it! I’ve been chagrined as we’re trying to be The Frugals while saving for a house of our own.
This is a great opportunity, but I’m wondering what the menu is like? I know penny-wise chefs often cheapen their menu for 25 for $25 since Frugals often deserve high-volume mediocrity as they only partronize fine establishments if a *bargain* is to be had.
Maybe I’ll just trot on over to scope the menu since I live in the hood (actually Thierry is our neighbor.) Not in this rain though! Almost a record… Is that why my jeans are feeling tight? Post-holidays, we really need a little more sun to walk off all that comfort food.

Ms. P - and now it’s like you have a freel meal and 10% oof (ish) a bottle of wine! Yeah!
JJ - You can’t sell the shop. I’ve been sending people there.

Have you been to Veil on Aloha St.?
January 10th, 2006 at 11:13 pm
JJ - yes. i guess i just don’t like my food to be so fucking clever. veil is so Wallpaper magazine, like 5 years ago. i want to know that a restaurant cares more about the flavors and my experience than the architectural lines of the plates or how the bar will photograph in a fluff piece. ( oh no i di……oh yes i did.)

Ok! OK! I’m comin up. That did it. I only got to go to Rover’s once when I lived in Seattle. It was one of the best meals of my life.

Well, this will certainly give girls night out new meaning. Any recommendations from the wine list?

I told my husband about this and he said, “no way!”
And I said, “way.”
And then he read the post and said, “so will we still have to go out for Valentine’s Day?”
And I said not if he let me pick the wine, and my EARLY present.
Dinner for 2 at Rover’s=$90. Skipping out on Valentine’s day=priceless.

Now I just have to find my 2. Newly single, so at least I get to save money this valentine’s day. What do you say, can two dudes enjoy a tassting menu together without having it be wierd?

Ravi -
I do most of my fine dining with a male friend of mine, mostly because most of the women I end up with usually have several food aversions, which make dining out about as much fun as herpes (not that I’d know, of course).
