Thoughts on Hurricane Katrina, Pleas for the Victims

Happy Slaver Day weekend to everyone, except the service industry workers for whom every holiday is a laborious day.

I continue to be unable to write about food or beverage when so many are going without.
I am appalled by the lack of response to our fellow HUMAN BEINGS.

Please donate today to www.secondharvest.org, whatever you can. 5$ is a latte and a scone. Seriously. 1$ can feed someone for more than a day. Think about that mediocre lunch you buy yourself at least once a week….Change one teeny, tiny little habit. Don’t buy that new t-shirt, eat in just that once, go to a matinee and donate the difference. By making a small donation every couple of weeks, you really, truly will be saving lives.

Some things on my mind and yours.

Fear & Loathing in New Orleans

1). I’m sorry, can someone explain to me again what HOMELAND SECURITY means? What Was Said vs. What Is Happening, from CNN

2). Why aren’t Indianapolis, Memphis, Birmingham, etc. stepping up to the plate? I hear about the Astrodome in Houston taking in refugees. Anyone else???????? Daley ’shocked’ at federal snub of offers to help from Chicago Trib

Donate to some of the food banks closest to the refugees:

www.austinfoodbank.org in Austin, TX
www.etexfoodbank.org for East Texas
www.endhungernetwork.org in Houston, TX
www.msfoodnet.org/ in Jackson, MS
www.memphisfoodbank.org in Memphis, TN

3). Our conservative government talks about doing “for America,” but clearly they have a complete and utter disregard for most Americans. And by most, I mean anyone worth less than 3 million dollars. 34% of the people of New Orleans were already living below the poverty line. You are seeing exactly what this government thinks about the dienfranchised. Nothing. They would rather golf or go shoe shopping. They want to win; they want to be in charge; but they don’t want to do the job.

While you bought Ferragamos, Condie, there was a woman trapped in her swealtering attic, swollen from being submerged in contaminated water, barely able to swallow from thirst, past being hungry, but told rescuers to get the children in the house next door first. So did you go with the blue or the black $600 pumps?

But Dennis Hastert (R, Illinois) gets my Worthless-Fucking-Human-Being award: Denis Hastert Questions Rebuilding New Orleans from the Washington Post. Way to go, Denny. Way to piss on their grave, fucko.

4). I scare myself at the amount of rage I feel when I here neo-conservative bastards dare to blame the victims in this tragedy. A curse on you all with all that my Sicilian stink eye can muster. I spit in your general direction. You arrogant fucking pricks. You are the scum of the earth, you just have nice shoes. May empathy be thrust upon you by the cruelest and darkest of karmactic forces.

5). I can’t possibly see how a little blue dress can come close to such a disgusting show of inhumanity on the part of George Bush and his.

6). If Brett Favre Can Do It, Why Can’t the Leader of the Free World? from the Chicago Sun Times

7). We were quicker to respond half a world away when Asia experienced a tsunami. What about all of the cruise ships and military ships in the Gulf and Central Mexico? Why are we doing nothing.

8). If you do one thing, listen to audio, from CNN, of the Mayor of New Orleans, Ray Nagins, pleading, begging for help. HERE I emplore you.

9). I reiterate: These people did not choose to stay. They had no way to leave. No where to go.

10). Inaction is murder. “We never saw them, we only heard their screams.

SPREAD THE NEWS:

If you are trying to make sure a family or loved one is OK, submit your request: hurricanrelief@cnn.com.

If you are trying to get any news on a family member, your house, or want to let people know you are OK, go to this site that uses satellite imagery provided by Google: www.scipionus.com

The charity that I am urging people to contribute to is America’s Second Harvest at www.secondharvest.org. I believe very strongly in this charity. They are a network of food banks with nothing but experience when it comes to getting food to those in need. Please. And thank you to the donations I received from readers directly through this site. Every penny will go to America’s Second Harvest.

I respect your ability to be articulate. All I could come up with was a short post on my other site, catajtrophe.blogspot.com, full of piss and vinegar and lots of fuck-you’s.

I’ve never been so bottom-level disgusted in all my little life. And here I had all this really cool food/wine/fun to share, goddammit.

Speaking of food, my husband and I are trying to put together a fund raising event. Our goal: to get as many restaurants in the austin area as possible to participate in a one-night benefit for the Red Cross. Wish us well.

    Cheers, goddammit,
    taj

  2. W. Feegus Says:

    Thank you.
I think we all can get a little wrapped up in our own lives. I feel guilty that I was net-surfing my favorite sites, just now. I admit I was sad you hadn’t written anything new. Clearly you feel strongly about New Orleans. You knocked me out of my cocoon and I’m going to go to the second harvest website right now.

  3. tyler Says:

I think you just condensed about 2 days worth of talk radio into some pretty fucking rad talking points.

    So what time’s the revolution?

  4. jersey Says:

Why aren’t they putting food and water on any tall, moving vehicle that can hold it? Quit trying to manage the problem and just react! Quit meeting and start ordering people around!

Why can’t they put stuff on to railroad cars and get it as close as they can, empty the supplies and fill it with people? Shouldn’t the government be commandeering every four wheeler in the 10 state area? Shit, I’m no military genius, but I can think of 20 things they could do that they aren’t doing!

  5. me, the writer Says:

Taj, thank you and good luck–that’s an awesome idea. If you are lucky enough to eat well, you should feel bad enough to give something.

    Tyler, 5 o’clock, my house.

Jersey, what can I say? You said it all.

W., Good. AMericans have too little empathy, too short attention spans, and too much money.

My goal this week is to get 20 people to donate. Challenge!

  6. japan-o-matic.com Says:

God damn girl ROCK ON! You have just encapsulated every goddamned thing that’s gone through my head in the last 2 weeks. THANK YOU!
